Pakistan and United Kingdom Reaffirm Commitment to Strategic Economic Reforms

ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Pakistan and the United Kingdom on Tuesday reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening their bilateral development partnership and advancing Islamabad’s ongoing economic reform agenda. The pledge was made during a high-level meeting between the Development Director at the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Sam Waldock, and the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Cheema.
Strengthening Economic Cooperation and Reform Agendas
During the meeting, Minister Ahad Cheema provided a detailed overview of the government’s strategic efforts to modernize the national tariff policy. He highlighted the implementation of comprehensive, sector-specific reforms—including new frameworks for mobile technology and industrial growth—designed to sharpen national competitiveness and foster long-term sustainable development. These discussions align with broader efforts to integrate global standards into local frameworks, similar to the government’s work on Pakistan’s landmark judicial reform framework for global rule standards.
Enhancing Institutional Efficiency and Financial Oversight
Minister Cheema expressed gratitude for the FCDO’s technical support regarding the Strategic Initiatives Unit (SIU), which facilitates improved policy execution through dedicated delivery mechanisms. He further noted the importance of UK assistance in empowering the Governance Reforms Unit (GRU) to advance institutional transparency. Addressing market stability, the Minister explained that the current petroleum pricing mechanism has successfully curbed hoarding, reflecting a broader commitment to fiscal discipline. This reflects the government’s ongoing push for modernization in the energy sector, much like recent efforts by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik to discuss expanding energy cooperation.
Predictive Analysis and Future Development Goals
The Minister emphasized that economic stability remains the administration’s primary objective, with the Prime Minister personally chairing weekly sessions to scrutinize the performance of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and evaluate the progress of key financial projects. To ensure fiscal responsibility, the government is mandating that all future development projects undergo rigorous predictive analysis, ensuring better utilization of public resources and improved planning efficacy. This focus on long-term sustainability is critical for the nation’s economic trajectory, mirroring the strategic focus seen in recent initiatives such as Pakistan’s appointment of global banking consortiums for strategic debt issuance programs.
UK Reaffirms Support for Pakistan’s Development
Development Director Sam Waldock praised the government’s progress on tariff and sector-specific policy reforms, particularly in the power and petroleum sectors. He lauded the steps taken to bolster transparency and sectoral efficiency, reiterating the United Kingdom’s steadfast commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development priorities. Both parties expressed confidence that the continued collaboration between Islamabad and London would prove vital in achieving their shared economic and developmental objectives.
