ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The United Kingdom has officially opened applications for three flagship scholarship and fellowship programmes, aiming to empower Pakistan’s next generation of academics, professionals, and entrepreneurs. The initiative includes the prestigious Chevening Scholarships, the Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Fellowship, and the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship, providing a pathway for emerging talent to access world-class education and build global networks.

Expanding Educational and Professional Horizons

Chevening Scholarships provide fully funded, one-year master’s degree programmes at UK universities. These awards are designed for individuals who demonstrate clear leadership potential, influence, and a vision for future impact. Complementing this, the Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Fellowship offers mid-career academics and professionals the unique opportunity to conduct independent research at the University of Oxford.

For the entrepreneurial sector, the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship is designed to support high-potential business owners. The programme assists participants in strengthening their business models, learning from UK-based experts, and preparing to scale their enterprises internationally. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to strengthened trade cooperation and professional development ties between the two nations.

A Commitment to Human Capital Development

British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott CMG OBE, underscored the strategic importance of these programmes, stating: “Pakistan has no shortage of talent, and these programmes help outstanding Pakistanis develop the skills, networks and ideas needed to lead institutions, grow businesses and tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.”

The UK government has mandated that all applications must reflect the candidate’s authentic experiences, ideas, and professional ambitions. A strict policy against the use of artificial intelligence has been implemented; applicants found to have submitted AI-generated responses face automatic disqualification from the selection process.

Programme Benefits and Application Details

Each programme is comprehensive, covering airfare, tuition fees, visa costs, and providing a stipend for living expenses. Beyond academic and professional growth, these fellowships facilitate the expansion of international networks and provide exposure to diverse global perspectives.

The impact of such initiatives is well-documented in the existing UK-Pakistan partnership. Currently, there are more than 2,000 Chevening alumni in Pakistan serving in critical sectors including public service, business, academia, media, and civil society. On a global scale, the alumni network includes more than 20 current or former heads of state or government.

Interested candidates may submit their Chevening applications via the official portal at chevening.org/apply. Applications for the Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Fellowship are available at chevening.org/fellowship/ocis/, while the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship is open for applications from 3 August to 1 September 2026, with further details hosted at cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk/apply.
