Trump’s close aide Natalie Harp becomes focus of US political debate

WASHINGTON: Natalie Harp, 35, a close aide to US President Donald Trump, has become the focus of growing attention in American political and media circles over the past few days. Her frequent presence alongside Trump, direct access to the president and role inside the White House have sparked a new political debate. However, there is no verified evidence of a romantic or inappropriate relationship between Trump and Harp.

Harp serves as Trump’s executive assistant and special assistant to the president. According to White House financial records, she was appointed to the position on January 20, 2025.

Harp has been associated with Trump’s political circle for several years. She first gained wider attention in 2019 when she credited Trump’s signing of the “Right to Try” legislation with helping her recovery. She later joined Trump’s advisory board during his 2020 presidential campaign and addressed the Republican National Convention.

Harp subsequently worked as a television host at One America News Network before returning to Trump’s political circle after 2022. She later became one of the president’s close aides at the White House.

Because of her close working relationship with Trump and her role in providing him with information, Harp has reportedly been nicknamed the “Human Printer.” Reports say she prints news articles, online material and other information for Trump, while also playing a role in some of the president’s social media activities.

Harp’s name came into the spotlight more prominently in recent days after Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia made a sarcastic remark about Trump and his aide during a campaign event. Ossoff criticised Trump and referred to Harp’s presence during his travels, turning their close association into a subject of political debate.

The senator’s comments triggered an intense discussion on social media between Trump supporters and critics. The White House also responded strongly to Ossoff’s remarks. Trump communications director Steven Cheung criticised the senator, while Trump himself rejected Ossoff’s comments.

The controversy gained further attention when CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes asked Trump about Harp following an event. Trump reacted angrily to the question, telling the reporter to be quiet and referring to her as “fake news.”

A White House social media account subsequently issued a strongly worded and personal response against Holmes, which also referred to her children. CNN criticised the White House’s response and defended its correspondent.

Harp’s access to President Trump has become another significant aspect of the controversy. According to various reports, she is among Trump’s closest aides and has accompanied him on several domestic and international trips. Her presence alongside the president during certain sensitive situations has also drawn attention to her role and influence.

The nature of Harp’s relationship with Trump has been discussed in the media previously. Recent reporting in a book has also referred to highly admiring private notes that Harp reportedly left for Trump. Such reports have further fuelled speculation about the unusually close working relationship between the president and his aide.

However, an important distinction must be maintained between verified facts and speculation. Harp’s position as a close Trump aide, her frequent presence alongside the president and her access to him are matters that have been reported. There is, however, no credible evidence establishing a romantic or sexual relationship between the two.

The Natalie Harp controversy is therefore currently less a proven scandal than a wider debate in American politics over Trump’s inner circle, the access enjoyed by his aides, their influence on the president and questions raised by his political opponents.
