ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar on Thursday raised serious concerns over the persistent delays in the issuance of UK visas to Pakistani students during a high-level meeting with British High Commissioner Jane Marriott. The diplomat assured him that the matter would be promptly addressed to prevent further academic disruption.

The meeting, held in Islamabad, focused on the ongoing Pakistan-UK bilateral relations, various matters of mutual interest, and specific measures aimed at further strengthening the institutional cooperation between the two nations. This dialogue aligns with broader efforts to support youth development, similar to initiatives highlighted during the Thirty-Three Pakistani Scholars Prepare For Prestigious UK University Studies program.

Concerns Over Academic Disruptions

During the session, the law minister conveyed the government’s formal concern regarding delays in visa processing for Pakistani students. He emphasized that hundreds of individuals were currently facing significant difficulties, warning that such prolonged delays could result in the unfortunate loss of an entire academic year for these scholars.

Tarar stressed the urgent need to remove administrative obstacles faced by Pakistani students seeking higher education in the United Kingdom. He underscored the importance of facilitating these students to ensure they can complete their studies without unnecessary institutional hurdles.

Government Initiatives and Future Cooperation

He informed the British high commissioner that, acting on the specific directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, a dedicated committee headed by him was currently working to improve the legal and institutional framework for Pakistani students pursuing education abroad. The minister noted that comprehensive efforts are now underway to strengthen legal and institutional mechanisms to resolve these systemic issues. In response to these concerns, Jane Marriott assured the minister that the matter of visa delays would be resolved expeditiously.

The two sides also explored expanded avenues to strengthen educational ties and enhance academic cooperation between Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Minister of State for Law, Justice and Human Rights Barrister Aqeel Malik was also in attendance during the discussion, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of its citizens abroad.
