NEW YORK: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that Tehran had conveyed a seven-day plan to the United States through intermediaries aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Araghchi said Iran would reopen the waterway within seven days if Washington agreed to the terms of the proposal, after which negotiations between the two countries would begin.

He said the proposals had been conveyed to the United States through mediators and were based on issues previously discussed between Tehran and Washington. The Iranian foreign minister did not disclose the complete details of the plan.

According to reports, Iran has called for a reduction in US military pressure and an end to the blockade of Iranian ports as part of the proposed arrangements. Tehran has linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to agreement on these broader measures.

The statement follows a Reuters report published on Sept 22, which quoted a senior Iranian official as saying that Tehran had sent a proposal to Washington through intermediaries on Sept 16. Under the proposal, Iran would reopen the Strait within a week if the United States eased military pressure and lifted the blockade of Iranian ports.

The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a major global energy transit route. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway has significant implications for international oil markets and energy supplies.

Mr Araghchi’s remarks come amid continuing diplomatic contacts between Iran and the United States over an end to hostilities and the possibility of renewed negotiations.
