UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Arrives in Islamabad for Three-Day Visit

ISLAMABAD, Oct 6 — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Pakistan, which will continue until October 8.
Guterres is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. He was received at the airport by Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir and senior officials.
During his visit, the UN Secretary-General is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Guterres will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where he is expected to receive briefings on the UN peacekeeping mission and Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and early-warning systems.
The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on regional and international developments, global peace and security, multilateralism, and Pakistan’s cooperation with the United Nations.
The humanitarian dimension of the visit is also significant, particularly in view of Pakistan’s experience with devastating floods and other climate-related disasters. The UN has remained involved in supporting Pakistan’s humanitarian and disaster-response efforts.
Guterres and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have also previously held discussions on international and regional issues, including developments in the Middle East, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Pakistan has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism, the UN Charter and international cooperation, while the UN Secretary-General has repeatedly highlighted the importance of international solidarity in addressing conflicts, humanitarian crises and climate-related challenges.
Guterres is currently serving the final months of his second term as UN Secretary-General, which is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026.
