Ambassador Khalil Hashmi Discusses Economic Cooperation with Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb

ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Pakistan’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Khalil Hashmi, held a strategic meeting with the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, to deliberate on strengthening bilateral economic cooperation and advancing investment initiatives. The meeting provided a platform to review ongoing financial ties and explore new avenues for economic integration between the two nations.
Advancing Economic Diplomacy
Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb commended Ambassador Hashmi for his dedicated efforts in promoting Pakistan’s economic interests within China. Acknowledging the proactive role of the Embassy in Beijing, the Finance Minister reiterated that the current government’s economic agenda remains focused on attracting high-quality foreign direct investment, bolstering export volumes, and fostering robust private sector collaboration. Such initiatives align with broader national goals of achieving economic stability and future growth for Pakistan.
Progress in Investment Facilitation
During the briefing, Ambassador Hashmi provided a comprehensive update on investment facilitation efforts. He noted that Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) valued at over US$20 billion have been established between Pakistani and Chinese entities. Importantly, a dedicated monitoring mechanism is in place to ensure these commitments transition into formal agreements. The Ambassador highlighted that a substantial portion of these pledges has already evolved into concrete commercial arrangements, signalling a positive trajectory for bilateral cooperation.
Sectoral Growth and Industrial Engagement
Ambassador Hashmi underscored significant interest from the Chinese private sector across diverse domains, including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, logistics, biotechnology, and textiles. He reported that nine new agreements have been finalized in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Furthermore, the Embassy is actively engaging with over 150 Chinese enterprises through a specialized facilitation platform. Both parties also reviewed progress on existing infrastructure and industrial manufacturing projects currently under implementation.
Strategic Institutional Coordination
The dialogue also touched upon deepening collaboration in capital markets and sovereign financing. Ambassador Hashmi discussed ongoing coordination with major financial institutions, including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Silk Road Fund, to support private sector growth. Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb stressed the importance of translating these commitments into timely project execution, urging seamless coordination across government agencies to enhance investor confidence and maximize the benefits of the partnership between states.
Future Outlook and Trade Integration
Discussions concluded with a focus on optimizing the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement (CPFTA). The participants explored strategies to improve market access for Pakistani products and encourage value-added manufacturing. Minister Aurangzeb reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing structural reforms and improving the ease of doing business to ensure long-term, sustainable economic growth. The meeting also addressed the need to align vocational and technical training with the requirements of new Chinese industrial investments, ensuring that the local workforce is adequately prepared for emerging opportunities.
