PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (special crosspondent) – Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, attended a high-level luncheon hosted in his honour by the Senate of Cambodia during the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC). The event served as a focal point for diplomatic engagement, emphasizing the role of legislative bodies in fostering global stability.

Diplomatic Engagements in Phnom Penh

The luncheon was hosted by H.E Neak Oknah Datuk Dr. Othsman Hassan, Senior Minister in charge of Special Mission of the Royal Government of Cambodia. During the proceedings, the dialogue centered on the imperative of promoting peace, sustained dialogue, and deeper inter-parliamentary cooperation. Chairman Gilani underscored that his mission through the ISC is to advance global peace through proactive parliamentary diplomacy and collective legislative action. He noted that the conference provides a vital platform for Speakers and Presiding Officers to build consensus on shared challenges and foster mutual understanding among nations.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Dr. (H.C.) Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, Speaker of the House of Regional Representatives of Indonesia, was also present at the luncheon. Chairman Gilani and the Indonesian Speaker exchanged views on key items related to the ISC agenda and explored avenues for further bilateral and regional inter-parliamentary cooperation. Such initiatives are often pivotal in addressing complex geopolitical issues, much like the diplomatic efforts involving regional security concerns elsewhere.

Strategic Objectives of the Conference

Delegates in attendance acknowledged the pivotal role of the ISC in bringing together legislative leadership to address issues of common concern. They emphasized that sustained inter-parliamentary engagement contributes significantly to the peaceful resolution of disputes and to the development of deeper regional connectivity. Chairman Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the objectives of the ISC and expressed confidence that the 2nd Conference in Cambodia would further strengthen inter-parliamentary linkages and promote the overarching cause of global peace.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The event was attended by H.E. Zaheeruddin Babar Thaheem, Ambassador of Pakistan to Cambodia, and Ms. Misbah Khar, Advisor to the Chairman Senate and Ambassador to the ISC. Also present were MNA Shumaila Rana and Indonesian Senator Mirah Midadan Fahmid. Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani is scheduled to address a plenary session of the 2nd ISC and will hold further high-level meetings with various parliamentary leaders participating in the Conference.
