ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan, H.E. Paulo Miguel Guedes Dominguez, held a high-level meeting with Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani at his residence in the Ministers’ Enclave, Islamabad, today. The discussions primarily focused on strengthening bilateral relations, with a specific emphasis on trade, investment, parliamentary cooperation, and fostering stronger people-to-people contacts.

Expanding Economic and Parliamentary Cooperation

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani underscored the significance Pakistan places on its enduring and friendly ties with Portugal. He expressed a strong desire to bolster cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, IT, education, culture, and the blue economy. Echoing sentiments often discussed regarding the broader region, such as when FPCCI President urges strengthening economic cooperation across ECO member nations, the Chairman noted the vast potential for expanding economic engagement by identifying new market opportunities. He specifically invited Portuguese investors to capitalize on Pakistan’s emerging business climate to establish mutually beneficial partnerships.

Regarding parliamentary diplomacy, the Chairman highlighted the importance of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC), describing it as a vital platform for advancing regional peace, security, and development. This alignment on global stability is often a priority in high-level diplomatic dialogues, similar to efforts where DPM/FM Dar and the Turkish FM discuss efforts to promote regional peace.

Labour Mobility and Educational Exchange

Addressing the presence of the Pakistani diaspora, Chairman Gilani lauded the contribution of the approximately 50,000 Pakistanis currently living and working in Portugal. He characterized this community as a vital bridge between the two nations and stressed the necessity of deeper cooperation in labour and human resource development. The Chairman expressed optimism for the swift finalization of an Agreement on Labour Mobility Partnership, which would establish a formal framework for cooperation. Furthermore, he advocated for enhanced educational collaboration, suggesting increased student and faculty exchanges as well as joint research initiatives between universities in both countries.

Commitment to Future Bilateral Engagement

In his remarks, Chairman Gilani expressed appreciation for Portugal’s consistent support regarding Pakistan’s GSP Plus status and emphasized that frequent high-level exchanges are essential for deepening bilateral ties. Ambassador Paulo Miguel Guedes Dominguez conveyed his gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Portugal’s keen interest in diversifying its economic relationship with Pakistan. Both dignitaries concluded the meeting by reaffirming their shared commitment to a closer, mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries.
