ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi presided over the 6th Meeting of the Board of Trustees of the ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF) in Islamabad. The high-level gathering convened prominent regional leaders, including the Minister of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Simaei Sarraf, and Federal Secretary for Science and Technology Shahid Iqbal Baloch. Other notable attendees included ECO Secretary General Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan, ECOSF President Prof. Seyed Komail Tayebi, and Executive Director Ghulam Muhammad Memon, alongside various regional delegates.

Commitment to Regional Scientific Excellence

Addressing the assembly, Minister Magsi underscored Pakistan’s role as a dedicated host, reaffirming the nation’s steadfast support for the ECOSF. He described the foundation as a vital platform for fostering scientific excellence and innovation. Addressing Shared Regional Challenges

Minister Magsi observed that the region is endowed with significant potential, including a demographic dividend and abundant natural resources. However, he cautioned that collective action is imperative to mitigate shared threats, such as climate change, food and water insecurity, and digital inequality. He asserted that relying on isolated national efforts is insufficient, advocating instead for a unified approach to scientific research and STEM education.

Strengthening Financial and Institutional Foundations

The Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology, Hossein Simaei Sarraf, echoed these sentiments, pledging Iran’s commitment to overcoming the foundation’s financial hurdles. Minister Magsi issued a call to action for member states that have not yet ratified the ECOSF Charter, urging them to accelerate their internal procedures. The Minister further stressed the importance of timely financial contributions, noting that sustainable funding is critical to the success of regional projects, much like the focus on economic stability seen in recent Pakistan and United Kingdom Reaffirm Commitment to Strategic Economic Reforms. He concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s readiness to assist the ECOSF in developing outcome-oriented programs that address the unique needs of the member states.
