ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has officially promoted Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Syed Aamer Raza to the rank of Four-Star General and appointed him as the inaugural Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC). As reported in recent major leadership updates, this appointment marks a pivotal shift in the nation’s defence hierarchy, as General Aamer Raza becomes the first officer to helm the newly established National Strategic Command—a position integral to the nation’s long-term security architecture.

A Distinguished Military Career

General Aamer Raza’s path to the pinnacle of military leadership began at the Officers Training School (OTS), Mangla. Following his graduation, he was commissioned into the Pakistan Army’s prestigious 6th Lancers (Watson’s Horse) regiment in 1988. His academic credentials include graduation from the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence University, Islamabad, complemented by an advanced degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Throughout a career spanning nearly four decades, he has held diverse command and instructional roles. His field experience includes leading the 6th Lancers Regiment, an Armoured Brigade, an Infantry Brigade in South Waziristan, and an Infantry Division. His staff appointments have been equally varied, serving as Chief of Staff of the II Corps, Director General of Weapons and Equipment, and holding key instructional roles at the School of Armour and Mechanised Warfare, as well as serving as Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and Director of the Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies (FORADS).

Contributions to Defence and Counterterrorism

Between 2020 and 2023, General Aamer Raza served as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT), where he oversaw vital defence production projects, significantly bolstering the country’s indigenous manufacturing capacity. Following his promotion to Lieutenant General in October 2022, he took command of the IV Corps in Lahore in May 2023. By January 2025, he ascended to the role of Chief of the General Staff, solidifying his status as a key operational strategist at General Headquarters.

His tactical experience is deeply rooted in Pakistan’s major counterterrorism initiatives, including Operation Zalzala, Rah-e-Nijat, Zarb-e-Azb, Radd-ul-Fasaad, and Azm-e-Istehkam. In recognition of his service, he has been decorated with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-e-Basalat. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while extending his congratulations, emphasized that General Aamer Raza’s appointment is expected to reinforce Pakistan’s strategic defence framework and uphold the highest standards of national security.
