ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The Government of Pakistan has officially announced a significant transition in its passport issuance protocol for Pakistani citizens currently residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Effective from the upcoming cycle, all new passport applications and renewal requests submitted within the UAE will be processed exclusively as e-Passports. This strategic shift is part of the broader national initiative to modernize the country’s travel documentation infrastructure, significantly bolstering security measures while ensuring compliance with rigorous international travel standards.

Operational Directives for UAE Residents

According to the official notification issued by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Dubai, the implementation of this policy is comprehensive. Any passport application filed following the policy’s commencement will be issued solely in the e-Passport format. This transition represents a major upgrade in how the state manages identity verification and cross-border security, aligning with global efforts to minimize document forgery and enhance border management efficiency.

Validity of Existing Machine Readable Passports

To mitigate inconvenience to the expatriate community, the consulate has explicitly clarified that existing Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) will retain their full validity until their respective expiry dates. Consequently, citizens currently holding a valid MRP are under no obligation to pursue an immediate replacement or transition to the new format before their document expires.
