Why did President Trump share a map of our country with the US flag? Iceland summons US ambassador

Reykjavik: Iceland has summoned US Ambassador Billy Long over a controversial map shared by US President Donald Trump on social media, showing Iceland and several other countries and territories under the colours of the American flag.

Trump shared the map on his social media platform Truth Social without any accompanying explanation or comment. The map depicted the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean in the colours of the US flag, with the entire region labelled “United States of America.”

Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned Ambassador Billy Long to the Foreign Ministry and conveyed Iceland’s concerns over the post. The ministry described the map as “completely inappropriate.”

Long took up his post as US ambassador to Iceland only last month.

Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in acquiring or taking control of Greenland have already created tensions between Washington and Copenhagen. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

The latest controversy comes as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a €200 million investment package for Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also repeatedly stressed that the Greenlandic government and people have made clear that they do not want to become part of the United States.

آئس لینڈ کی وزارت خارجہ کے مطابق وزیر خارجہ تھورگِردر کترین گنارسڈوتیر نے امریکی سفیر کو طلب کرکے واضح کیا کہ صدر ٹرمپ کی جانب سے شیئر کی گئی تصویر مکمل طور پر نامناسب تھی۔

ٹرمپ نے اپنے سوشل میڈیا پلیٹ فارم ’ٹروتھ سوشل‘ پر یہ نقشہ بغیر کسی وضاحت کے شیئر کیا تھا۔ نقشے میں امریکا کے علاوہ کینیڈا، گرین لینڈ، آئس لینڈ، میکسیکو، وسطی امریکا اور کیریبین کے علاقوں کو امریکی پرچم سے ڈھکا دکھایا گیا جبکہ پورے خطے پر ’’United States of America‘‘ درج تھا۔

امریکی سفیر بلی لانگ نے گزشتہ ماہ ہی آئس لینڈ میں باضابطہ طور پر اپنی ذمہ داریاں سنبھالی ہیں۔ امریکی محکمہ خارجہ اور امریکی سفارتخانوں کی جانب سے اس معاملے پر فوری طور پر کوئی ردعمل سامنے نہیں آیا۔

ٹرمپ کی جانب سے گرین لینڈ کو امریکا کا حصہ بنانے یا حاصل کرنے کی خواہش کے بارہا اظہار کے باعث واشنگٹن اور ڈنمارک کے درمیان پہلے ہی کشیدگی پائی جاتی ہے۔ گرین لینڈ ڈنمارک کی خودمختار علاقائی اکائی ہے۔
