ZAHIDAN (special crosspondent) – The Ambassador of Pakistan to Iran, H.E. Mr. Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, conducted a high-level series of meetings with Iranian provincial authorities in Zahidan to bolster cooperation across education, trade, connectivity, and border management sectors. These discussions align with broader regional diplomatic efforts, similar to recent regional security developments aimed at maintaining stability.

Academic and Institutional Engagement

Accepting an invitation from the local government, Ambassador Siddiqui visited the University of Sistan and Balochistan (UoSB). During the briefing on the institution’s academic framework, both parties explored avenues for deepening ties between UoSB and Pakistani universities. The dialogue focused on the implementation of existing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and the potential integration of Pakistan Studies courses into the university’s curriculum to foster cultural and academic exchange.

Strengthening Economic and Diplomatic Ties

In a significant meeting, Ambassador Siddiqui called on the Governor General of Sistan-Balochistan, Mr. Mansour Bijar. Given the 920 km shared border, the two leaders identified key measures to enhance economic cooperation and regional connectivity. They specifically committed to accelerating pending infrastructure projects and identifying new initiatives to streamline trade through the Mirjaveh-Taftan border crossing. Governor General Bijar confirmed that representatives from the province will participate in the upcoming Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting. During these talks, the officials also addressed regional security, with Governor General Bijar expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the US and Iran.

Border Management and Business Facilitation

Ambassador Siddiqui conducted an on-site review of the Mirjaveh-Taftan border crossing, engaging with Iranian authorities to identify and resolve administrative bottlenecks that hinder the efficient movement of goods and vehicles. Following his inspection of the Pakistani side of the border, where he was briefed by local officials, he emphasized the importance of maintaining an uninterrupted and streamlined logistics chain. The day concluded at the Zahedan Chamber of Commerce, where the Ambassador met with local business leaders. The deliberations focused on increasing business-to-business (B2B) engagements to boost bilateral trade volume. This visit marks a renewed commitment to enhancing strategic bilateral partnerships through tangible administrative and economic cooperation.
