NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump made a special mention of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, describing him as a “terrific man” and calling Pakistan a “great country.”Trump referred to the ceasefire between Pakistan and India in May 2025, once again claiming that he played a key role in bringing the two sides to an end to their military confrontation.The US president said he had helped stop eight wars or conflicts during his presidency, including the confrontation between Pakistan and India. He said some of the conflicts had continued for years or even decades before diplomatic efforts helped bring them to an end.Trump also said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had told him that his role had helped save around 30 million lives. According to Trump, leaders of several countries involved in the conflicts had also sent him letters thanking him for his efforts.Referring to the May 2025 Pakistan-India military confrontation, Trump again claimed that he had played a direct role in facilitating the ceasefire. India, however, has repeatedly disputed Trump’s account and maintained that the ceasefire was reached through direct military communication between Pakistan and India rather than through US mediation.Trump’s remarks came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is in New York to represent Pakistan at the UN General Assembly session.In his address, Trump also referred to other conflicts, including those involving Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and Armenia and Azerbaijan, while highlighting what he described as his role in efforts to resolve them.
