Two Latvian Citizens Enter US Intelligence Centre at Military Base in Britain

*LONDON:* Two Latvian citizens entered a US military base in Britain that hosts key American and NATO intelligence facilities, prompting a security investigation by British authorities. The two men were arrested and later released on bail under strict conditions, while counter-terrorism police continue to investigate the incident.

Russian news website Sada-e-Rus reported the incident on October 9, 2026, while British newspaper The Guardian published reports on October 8 and 9 detailing the arrests and subsequent investigation. According to the reports, the incident occurred at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire, England.

British authorities said security personnel began checking the area after a suspicious abandoned vehicle was found near the military installation. A breach was subsequently discovered in the base’s outer security fence. At approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, two men were found inside the base and taken into custody.

The suspects, aged 32 and 36, are Latvian nationals. They were initially arrested on suspicion of trespassing at a protected site and causing criminal damage. They were subsequently detained under Section 4 of the UK’s National Security Act 2023, which concerns entering or inspecting a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom.

Given the sensitive nature of the facility, the investigation was referred to British counter-terrorism police. Investigators are examining why the two men entered the military installation and whether the incident was connected to any criminal activity.

RAF Molesworth is an important intelligence facility used by the US military and NATO. The base hosts NATO’s Intelligence Fusion Centre, which supports military planning and operations by providing intelligence analysis and information to allied forces. The reported breach of the security perimeter has therefore raised concerns about the protection of sensitive military installations.

Police also searched two locations in the Peterborough area as part of the investigation. The abandoned vehicle found near the base was taken for examination, and explosive ordnance specialists were called in as a precaution. Initial checks reportedly found no suspicious items.

British authorities have also said there is currently no evidence linking the incident to a separate security incident near RAF Fairford, another military installation in Britain.

According to The Guardian, both Latvian nationals were subsequently released on bail under strict conditions. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding their entry into the base and their possible motives. However, authorities have not established that the men entered the facility with the intention of conducting espionage.
