Justification for New Trade Duties

President Trump said the decision was a response to what he described as Canada’s “unfair trade practices,” accusing Ottawa of imposing discriminatory policies on U.S. automobiles, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages. He said the tariffs were intended to protect American industries and ensure fairer trade. Scope of Tariff Measures

The new duties will apply to products including alcoholic beverages, hockey sticks, cement, and a range of industrial and consumer goods. However, key imports such as energy products, potash, critical minerals, and fish have been exempted from the measures to avoid disrupting strategic supply chains.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by saying his government would accelerate trade negotiations with the United States in an effort to resolve the dispute. In a statement posted on X, he argued that the U.S. move was inconsistent with the spirit of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) and reflected a continuation of Washington’s unilateral trade policies. Carney reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to protecting its economic interests and sovereignty, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned that if the U.S. proceeds with the new tariffs, Canada would respond with equivalent countermeasures, describing the approach as “tariffs for tariffs, dollar for dollar.” Analysts said the latest escalation could disrupt North American supply chains, increase costs for manufacturers and consumers, and put additional strain on trade and investment between the United States and Canada if a negotiated settlement is not reached.
