ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired a high-level meeting with the Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Oumer Hussein Oba, on August 19, 2026, to deliberate on strengthening bilateral cooperation in agriculture, livestock, food security, and technology transfer. The dialogue aimed to unlock the significant, yet largely untapped, agricultural potential existing between the two agrarian economies.

Expanding Institutional Partnerships

Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that both nations must translate existing bilateral goodwill into concrete projects and institutional partnerships. Highlighting Pakistan’s proficiency in advanced farming technologies, irrigation, and agro-processing, the Minister offered to share Pakistan’s technical expertise with Ethiopia to bolster productivity. This exchange of knowledge could see Pakistan provide critical support in crop development and climate-resilient farming techniques. This collaborative approach mirrors the spirit of strengthening economic cooperation which remains a priority for Pakistan’s foreign policy.

Focus on Livestock and Trade

The discussion extended to the livestock sector, covering essential areas such as veterinary services, animal breeding, and modern value chains. Both officials identified the potential for enhancing bilateral trade by aligning on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards to ensure improved market access. The Minister further advocated for increased business-to-business linkages and the formation of a Joint Working Group on Agriculture and Livestock to serve as a formal mechanism for regular engagement.
