Pakistan-Iran Border Trade Suspended Amid Security Concerns, Technical Issues and Banking Hurdles

Pakistan-Iran Border Trade Suspended Amid Security Concerns, Technical Issues and Banking Hurdles

*ISLAMABAD, October 19, 2026:* Trade activities at key border crossings between Pakistan and Iran have been suspended, disrupting bilateral commerce and affecting the movement of cargo vehicles and goods. Pakistani officials have cited security concerns, efforts to curb smuggling and measures to improve border management, while Iranian authorities have referred to technical issues and precautionary measures.

Shahid Rind, adviser to the Balochistan chief minister on political and media affairs, said the temporary suspension was aimed at improving security arrangements, preventing illegal trade and smuggling, and strengthening border management. He said senior officials from both countries were in contact and discussions were underway to restore normal border activities. However, no confirmed date for the resumption of regular trade had been announced.

The Taftan and Gabd-Rimdan border crossings are important routes for trade between Pakistan and Iran. Goods transported through these crossings include liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), food items, fruits, rice and other commodities. The suspension has disrupted cargo movement and caused delays in the transportation of goods, according to media reports.

Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have attributed the temporary disruption in cross-border movement to technical difficulties and precautionary measures. They have indicated that relevant authorities are maintaining contact and that discussions are continuing to restore normal operations. However, the explanations provided by the two countries have not been entirely identical in their details.

Iranian exporters are also facing difficulties related to payments, import procedures and Pakistan’s Electronic Import Form (EIF) requirements. Iranian trade representatives have said international financial sanctions and banking restrictions have complicated exports to Pakistan. These financial and procedural hurdles can affect bilateral trade independently of the current border suspension.

Media reports have also indicated that cargo vehicles have been stranded and the transportation of commodities, including LPG, has been disrupted. If the suspension continues, it could affect the availability of imported goods, transportation costs and the prices of certain commodities in Pakistan.

However, the suspension of commercial traffic should be distinguished from restrictions on ordinary passenger movement. Some reports have indicated that passenger traffic continued at certain crossings, meaning it would be inaccurate to conclude that all movement across the entire Pakistan-Iran border has been completely halted.

Contacts between the two countries are continuing to restore border operations. As of October 19, no confirmed date had been announced for the complete resumption of bilateral trade.
